Juan Toran
Juan Toran was just out of high school when he stepped into a century-old tobacconist shop in Madrid and lit his first cigar—a Cohiba Siglo IV. The cigar, part of a collection honoring the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in Cuba, marked more than a milestone in history. For Juan, it sparked a lifelong appreciation for the art of slowing down, of savoring life, and of pursuing the deeper layers of culture.
Born and raised in Minneapolis until the age of 14, Juan returned with his family to Spain, where he finished high school before pursuing a master’s degree in business in Madrid, Spain and in Lyon, France. During those formative years, he made full use of Europe’s open borders and cheap student travel, visiting friends across the continent and absorbing new cultures with each trip. That mosaic of languages, customs, and philosophies continues to shape his worldview.
In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, Juan sensed greater opportunity in the U.S. and chose to return to Minnesota—this time for good. As a dual citizen, he planted roots, became a husband and father, and cultivated a richly varied life that bridges intellect, movement, and artistry. His passions range from yoga, philosophy, and personal training to snowboarding, champion swimming, bespoke menswear, and, naturally, cigars. “I love anything artisanal, anything steeped in culture and history,” Juan reflects. “I’m endlessly curious. When something captures my attention, I dive into it completely.”
That curiosity has recently fueled his next bold move: an attempt at launching his own cigar brand. But for Juan, it’s not just about the smoke—it’s about creating space for reflection, for connection, for the kind of meaningful conversation that’s become all too rare.
“We’re always rushing. We’ve forgotten the joy of unhurried dialogue. These days, it seems like every conversation is a debate—someone trying to win, instead of trying to understand. Men are lonelier than ever. We’ve traded real connection for doom scrolling, measuring ourselves against impossible standards, and judging others just as harshly.”
His mission is simple: inspire others to slow down, to live more deliberately, and to find joy in the thoughtful rituals of life. Follow Juan’s journey at @drapeandsmoke.
