Macallan is perhaps the most well-known of all scotch distilleries. For many years they released a non-age stated Cask Strength bottle, but since their final release of that in 2013 (which goes for over $1K on the secondary market), their releases have been strictly watered down. The only way to get a bottle at full proof has been from independent bottlers.
Tonight we have three 12-year Macallans, all at cask strength. They were bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, and what makes them really special is that they are sister casks. All were distilled on the same day (Oct. 13 2008). All started out in barrels that had held Oloroso Sherry. 1 of them was finished in a 1st fill bourbon barrel to give it notes of vanilla and oak. The other 2 were both finished in Pedro Ximinez barrels, and despite the similarity in the barrels they imparted some interestingly different flavors to the distillate.
These were very limited releases, there were roughly 300 total bottles of each released globally.
All 3 single cask bottles are over 63% ABV and are guaranteed to be delicious.
