In 1974 the Dalton Highway was constructed to service the newly open Alaskan oil fields on the Arctic Ocean. This 414 unpaved road was built atop the frozen tundra of Alaska, crossing the desolate Brooks Range and the endless North Slope.
In 2006 this road was opened to the public – just 30 months later Bryan Whitehead decided to ride his motorcycle over these still frozen roads to Deadhorse – essentially an industrial compound servicing the burgeoning Alaskan oil fields perched on the Arctic Ocean.
The Dalton Highway has been featured on Discovery Channel’s Ice Road Truckers, BBC’s The World’s most Dangerous Roads and on the Long Way Around documentary among others. Bryan saw herds of thousands of Caribou, Musk Oxen shedding their winter coats and Arctic Foxes running across the tundra. Grizzly Bears are known to roam the hallways of the sleeping facilities at night knocking over trash cans outside your rooms.
Whitehead has done this trip three separate times – no two trips are ever the same. In this presentation he’ll discuss the changes in the environment observed from his first trip in 2009 to his most recent trip in 2016.
